Ming Dih Chemical factory fire flares again in Samut Prakan

On August 25, a fire broke out at the former Ming Dih Chemical factory in Samut Prakan, Thailand, sending thick smoke into the sky. No injuries or fatalities were reported. The fire originated from old chemical tanks left at the site, containing significant amounts of old foam and foam pellets. Firefighters from Bang Phli Yai and Racha Thewa Subdistrict Administrative Organizations swiftly brought the blaze under control within approximately 20 minutes.

Nattapon Rupan, a firefighter with Racha Thewa Subdistrict Administrative Organization, suggested the fire may have been sparked due to individuals illegally entering the site to salvage stainless-steel tanks and scrap metal for profit. He noticed the potential ignition source was sparks from cutting activities, which occurred at night, and frequent unauthorized entry into the facility. Though flames were not visible during his testimony, residual heat persisted, and firefighters maintained vigilance over the area.

The location had experienced a major explosion and fire on July 5, 2021, which resulted in substantial damage, injuries to numerous individuals, and loss of one firefighter. Reports of unauthorized individuals entering the site to cut and steal scrap metal have persisted since then, often leading to subsequent fires. Despite these recurring issues, the problem has not been adequately addressed.

Local residents have demanded enhanced security measures and prevention of unauthorized site access from the factory operator and relevant authorities, citing fears of a similar catastrophe to the 2021 disaster. They also urged the inspection and proper disposal of leftover foam, chemicals, and raw materials before another serious incident occurs.

Ming Dih Industry, established in 1986, specializes in producing expandable polystyrene (EPS), a material utilized in packaging, industrial goods, and construction materials. The company states its products are exported to various international markets.
