Microsoft warns that transitioning Excel workbooks to new Exchange connectors might not be smooth sailing

Microsoft has cautioned Excel users that transitioning workbooks to the new Exchange connectors may not be as seamless as anticipated. To continue utilizing the Exchange Connector, users will need to migrate their workbook connections and switch to either Microsoft 365 or Office 2024. Microsoft has released a timeline for the switchover via its Message Center, indicating that customer validation of the new Exchange Mail and Calendar connectors begins in August (along with early adopters), with the final phase of the Exchange Web Services (EWS) retirement enforcement slated for October. The current Exchange connector in Excel Power Query is set for retirement in April 2027.

Microsoft has not disclosed its plans for Contacts and Tasks, stating that guidance for these scenarios will be provided separately. The issue for users is that existing workbooks will not automatically transition to the new connectors. Workbooks relying on Exchange Mail and Calendar data will need to be reconnected. Additionally, users may require an Office update, meaning they must have Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 to utilize the new connectors.

Determining which users and workbooks employ the existing Exchange connector for Mail or Calendar data is another challenge. Although the new connector experience remains unavailable, preparation will be crucial, along with developing migration and validation plans well before the transition. Microsoft has provided ample notice for the EWS retirement but has yet to announce a timeline for rolling out the new connectors.

Administrators are asked to identify users who actively use Exchange-connected workbooks and may be interested in validating the new Exchange Mail and Exchange Calendar connectors.
