Microsoft Teams administrators finally get the option to block external bots from meetings

Microsoft has introduced a new security feature for Teams administrators, allowing them to automatically block external bots from joining meetings. Previously, when a bot would enter the meeting lobby, administrators could manually decide whether to allow or deny access. This new update will prevent external bots from entering meetings altogether, providing organizations with greater control over security and reducing the risks associated with unwanted participants.

However, the feature will be disabled by default, as Microsoft does not want to ban third-party bots outright. Administrators will be able to enable the policy for specific users or groups, providing a balance between security and functionality.

The new security policy is part of Microsoft's ongoing efforts to enhance the safety of Teams, especially as the platform sees an increase in cybercriminal activity. Meera Ajam, a Microsoft spokesperson, explained that bots have begun joining meetings that participants never intended them to attend, highlighting a shift towards hybrid meetings that include both human and machine participants.

Nonetheless, it is important to note that legitimate tools like AI meeting assistants, transcription tools, recording add-ons, and other similar tools could also be mistakenly blocked. Therefore, the feature will initially be disabled to avoid inadvertently blocking these essential tools. Microsoft plans to introduce further admin controls, such as allow lists for approved bots and audit logs, to provide even more robust security measures. The update is now rolling out, with general availability expected by late September.
