Memorial to two police officers killed in Porepunkah unveiled

Two police officers killed in a siege in Porepunkah, Victoria, last August were honored at a memorial service in Wangaratta on the one-year anniversary of their deaths. Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart were shot and killed during the incident. The memorial, which includes a monument, garden, and wreaths, was unveiled by police colleagues and dignitaries.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush acknowledged the tragedy, calling it one of the most somber days in Victoria Police history. The service featured personal reflections, a Police Ode, and a minute's silence. Family members of the fallen officers, including Neal Thompson's partner, Sergeant Lisa Thompson, and Vadim de Waart-Hottart's aunt and uncle, were present.

A book of cards and floral tributes from the community was presented to their families. The Victorian director of the Red Cross expressed hope that the service would bring closure and peace.
