Melnyk at UN: It Is a Shame That the Security Council Has Still Failed to Stop Russia’s Genocide of Ukrainians

Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Andrii Melnyk, expressed deep disappointment at the Security Council's ongoing inability to halt Russia's aggression and punish Moscow for its actions. Addressing a Security Council session, Melnyk emphasized that Russia is engaged in a deliberate campaign of ballistic terror against Ukraine, leveraging the scarcity of interceptor missiles for Ukrainian air defense.

The diplomat stressed that merely condemning Russian attacks falls short of effectively countering ballistic missiles and drones. Melnyk lamented that the UN Security Council has yet to take decisive action to hold Russia accountable and prevent the ongoing genocide of Ukrainians. He urged partners to enforce stringent and broad sanctions on Russia, particularly on entities involved in weapon production for the war against Ukraine.

Melnyk also advocated for an end to Russia's excessive use of its veto power within the Security Council. Separately, he appealed to international allies to provide Ukraine with all available Patriot interceptor missiles and other advanced air defense systems, criticizing the government for storing missiles capable of saving hundreds of lives each day instead of deploying them to safeguard Ukraine's civilian population.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is spearheading efforts to establish a global coalition to exponentially increase interceptor missile production, aiming to significantly bolster Ukraine's defenses against Russian attacks and serve as a deterrent against future strikes.
