Miami Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks departed Monday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox after facing just one batter, experiencing nerve irritation and numbness in his throwing arm. This incident followed a similar issue Fairbanks faced on April 27 during a game with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which was prematurely ended due to discomfort.

On Monday, Fairbanks issued a leadoff walk to Mickey Gasper in the ninth inning before stepping off the mound and expressing discomfort. He then talked with his catcher, Brian Navarre, and manager Clayton McCullough. Fairbanks commented that while warming up felt fine, the issue quickly escalated throughout his arm, compounding over time.

The 32-year-old, who signed a one-year deal with the Marlins after seven seasons with Tampa Bay, has appeared in 44 games and recorded 18 saves. After Monday’s game, Fairbanks underwent additional testing and is expected to miss a significant amount of time, similar to his three-week absence following the Los Angeles Dodgers incident.
