Manhyia South MP donates relief items to Fire Victims

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Esq., paid a visit to victims of a devastating fire that swept through the uppermost floor of a four-story building in AshTown, near the Manhyia Palace, on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The blaze left eight households affected and struggling to recover from the catastrophe.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though witnesses suggested it started when a child negligently ignited a gas cooker. Baffour Awuah paid a site visit to the disaster and expressed his sympathies to the stricken victims. He donated essential supplies, including sacks of rice, cans of tomatoes, and vegetable oil, to alleviate their immediate hardships.

Furthermore, Baffour Awuah pledged to offer GHC20,000 (equivalent to GHC2,500 per victim) from his share of the Common Fund to support the eight affected families. He also offered GHC2,000 to the landlady for electrical rewiring and roofing sheets to rebuild the damaged floor. Baffour Awuah emphasized the importance of visiting his fellow constituents during difficult times, stating, "I cannot abandon them (victims) in their times of need and come back to seek votes from them during election season."

He also highlighted the necessity of educating the public about fire prevention and its consequences, proposing that the constituency, in partnership with the Ghana National Fire Service, would initiate an educational campaign within the area. Baffour Awuah cautioned the public against the misuse of gas and electrical appliances to minimize the risk of fire outbreaks.
