LS Speaker issues notice to rebel TMC MPs

The Supreme Court issued a notice on Tuesday regarding a plea by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee, who claimed that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was delaying his disqualification petitions against 20 rebel MPs. The petitions were filed on June 18 against the 20 MPs who had joined the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).

Justices Bagchi and Mohana, along with CJI Surya Kant, issued notices to the 20 rebels, seeking their responses but refrained from issuing notice to the Speaker. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued against issuing notice to the Speaker, citing the need to respect constitutional authorities. The Speaker's office had already served notices to the 20 rebel MPs, requesting their responses to Banerjee's disqualification plea under the anti-defection law within seven days.
