Liverpool delegation jets out as new midfielder deal moves closer

Liverpool's delegation arrived in Colombia as negotiations for 18-year-old midfielder Matías Orozco reached a decisive stage. Orozco, who plays for Deportivo Cali, seemed to have completed his final game for the Colombian club before embarking on his move to Anfield.

Earlier this month, Liverpool's scouts watched Orozco during a match against Inter de Bogotá. The 18-year-old had recently signed a contract extension with Deportivo Cali until June 2029, solidifying his future at the Colombian club. Despite a slight injury during the 2-2 draw with Inter Bogotá, Orozco appeared ready to travel to England for the big move.

Sources indicate that Brentford and other Premier League clubs were also interested in the young talent, but Liverpool appeared to be in a strong position to complete the deal. Deportivo Cali manager Rafael Dudamel confirmed that negotiations were advancing for Orozco to join European football, with the player's family, agents, board, and coaching staff all agreeing to the transfer.

Liverpool's connection to Orozco seems to have played a significant role in the negotiations, with Samuel Martínez, a close friend of the young midfielder, reportedly helping to persuade Orozco to join Liverpool. Orozco, who made his senior debut for Deportivo Cali in June 2025, has quickly become one of the club's most valuable academy products. The young Colombian midfielder is known for his tactical awareness, possession skills, and ability to contribute both in midfield and around the box.
