Liberia’s ex-vice president will await trial on drug trafficking and other charges in prison

Liberia's former vice president, Jewel Howard-Taylor, has been imprisoned to await trial on charges of drug trafficking, money laundering and other offenses, following a court's denial of her request for humanitarian release to receive medical treatment. The court in the West African country denied Howard-Taylor's plea to remain at a local Monrovia hospital for her health emergency, as she had suffered an asthma attack and had high blood pressure while in police custody following her arrest.

Along with three other foreign nationals charged in absentia, Howard-Taylor stands accused of being part of an alleged transnational narcotics network. She was vice president from 2018 to 2024 and was arrested on August 19 at Roberts International Airport while attempting to leave Liberia. Her lawyers have dismissed the charges as politically motivated, but investigators have presented evidence including travel records, audio recordings, witness testimonies, and the link between her and a cocaine trafficking network.

Last month, Liberian authorities seized and burned over 4.2 metric tons of cocaine, estimated at $317 million, implicating some senior police officials in the trafficking operation, which has been tied to Howard-Taylor. West Africa has recently become a key transit route for cocaine trafficked from South America to Europe, with smugglers exploiting porous borders and weak enforcement in certain regions.
