Lee Chang-dong calls 'Possible Love' a film about how love upholds life

South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong has described his upcoming film Possible Love as a contemplation on the nature of love and its role in sustaining life. Speaking at a press conference, Lee noted that the movie, his first feature in eight years, stars Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong. The title implies the central theme of the film revolves around love in various forms, and how it can shape and support our existence.

The story follows two married couples - a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary filmmaker and her affluent husband - whose lives intersect as they encounter one another. Lee began developing the concept around ten years ago, initially focusing on the lives of a worker and his spouse, but later incorporated additional characters to enrich the narrative.

He collaborated with screenwriter Oh Jung-mi on the script, who previously worked with Lee on the critically acclaimed Burning. Lee expressed hope that viewers would not interpret the film as a critique of a specific South Korean company, but rather as a representation of the impact of job loss on individuals' lives and identities.

He emphasized that in an era of advancing technology, love serves as a vital force that helps people persevere, not limited to romantic relationships but encompassing all types of connections. Despite the film being released in select theaters on September 23 and streaming on Netflix from November 6, Lee stressed the importance of producing quality cinema regardless of distribution platforms.
