Arizona Cardinals linebacker Josh Sweat made his first appearance in practice during training camp on Monday after being removed from the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list. The edge rusher, who sustained a major knee injury in high school in 2014, wore a brace and sleeve on his left knee throughout his career. Despite the offseason drama involving speculation of a trade request and absence from the offseason program, it became clear that Sweat's conservative approach was the best decision for the Cardinals, as he played all 17 games last season.

However, a closer examination of Sweat's performance during the final eight games of the 2025 season revealed a significant decline in snaps and productivity. During the first nine games, Sweat averaged 37.2 snaps per game with a 54.8 percent participation rate, recording 8.0 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 12 quarterback hits, and 14 solo tackles.

In contrast, from week 10 onwards, he played 104 snaps at a 28.8 percent clip, contributing only one sack, solo tackle, tackle for loss, and quarterback hit. The decline in Sweat's snaps and productivity coincided with the Cardinals' nine-game losing streak, which included four games where they lost by a combined score of 159-71.

While the absence of other key players and injuries played a significant role in the team's struggles, Sweat's limited involvement cannot be overlooked. With an annual salary-cap charge of $16.385 million, the highest on the team, Sweat must demonstrate improved performance to justify his significant contract and secure his position with the Cardinals for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.
