Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan Joins Gachagua’s DCP

Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan Abdi has joined the ranks of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), a significant political development ahead of the 2027 General Election. The new addition to the DCP was formally welcomed by Gachagua at the party's headquarters on Tuesday, where Hassan donned a DCP cap before an enthusiastic gathering of supporters and officials.

Addressing the crowd after his party affiliation change, the veteran Nairobi politician expressed his desire for a political entity that prioritizes Kenyan interests and seeks to effect change, as Kenyans are weary of corrupt politics. This move adds to Gachagua's expanding political cohort as he strives to bolster DCP's nationwide footprint before the 2027 polls.

Hassan, who was elected to the Kamukunji constituency for a fourth term in the 2022 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket, secured the highest number of votes with 34,264, constituting 56.23% of the votes cast. In 2011, he was first elected to represent Kamukunji on a Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket, transitioning to The National Alliance (TNA) in 2013 and later joining the Jubilee Party in 2017.

His decision to align with DCP marks a new chapter in his political career following his long association with Jubilee. Gachagua has recently ramped up his political activities, aiming to strengthen DCP and forge a broader opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 election. His residence in Wamunyoro has become a hub for political consultations, with the former Deputy President hosting leaders, delegations, and supporters from across the country.

Gachagua has also been advocating for opposition unity, asserting that the opposition has a higher chance of defeating President William Ruto by rallying around a single presidential candidate. The move by Hassan to join DCP may have implications for political alignments in Kamukunji and Nairobi, where he has been a key political figure for over a decade.

As political parties and leaders gear up for the 2027 General Election, new alliances and party realignments are anticipated to play a pivotal role in shaping the electoral landscape.
