Jeff Bezos ordered to reinstate fired Black opinion writer at Washington Post over Charlie Kirk reaction

The Washington Post has been ordered by an arbitrator to reinstate Karen Attiah, a Black opinion writer, after she was fired over social media posts about Charlie Kirk, a white conservative man who was killed in September. The arbitrator, Sarah Miller Espinosa, ruled that the newspaper did not have sufficient cause to terminate Attiah, who at the time was the last Black full-time member of the Post's opinion desk.

The ruling also awarded Attiah full back pay and lost benefits. Charlie Kirk, a prominent podcaster and ally of President Donald Trump, was shot and killed in September during a public appearance at Utah Valley University. He had made provocative statements about race, gender, and politics, including critical remarks about the Black Lives Matter movement and the murder of George Floyd.

Attiah's firing sparked a debate over First Amendment rights and the treatment of journalists of color in the media.
