Japan Police Report Highlights Response to Cybercrimes

The National Police Agency of Japan released an annual report on Tuesday, showcasing the achievements and performances of its National Cyber Department. The report emphasized the department's efforts to enhance active cyberdefense measures, a mission that will be officially integrated with the police and Self-Defense Forces in October of the following year.

Among the accomplishments highlighted were the development of a recovery tool specifically designed to combat ransomware attacks. In this type of cybercrime, perpetrators encrypt the victim's data and demand a ransom in exchange for its decryption. The report also acknowledged Japan's contributions to international joint investigations.

The report featured insights from investigators, evaluations from abroad, and introductions to emerging technologies. It discussed active cyberdefense techniques, presenting examples of cyberattacks such as the theft of confidential information and attacks aimed at disrupting essential infrastructure services.

The National Police Agency outlined the procedures followed when neutralizing illegal access, stressing the significance of consistent response measures during both peacetime and emergencies. Additionally, the report mentioned plans to unify organizations at prefectural police forces across the country to better tackle more sophisticated and specialized crimes.

Efforts to secure personnel were also discussed, including revisions to police school rules and improvements in police officers' working conditions. The report further addressed measures against tokuryū, loosely organized anonymous criminal groups.

As the department enters its sixth year of operation, the National Police Agency remains committed to strengthening its cyberdefense capabilities and ensuring a seamless response from the police and Self-Defense Forces to emerging cyber threats.
