Jackson Hole With a Rate Rise Priced: What Warsh’s Debut Means for Latin America

The Jackson Hole economic symposium took place from August 27-29 at Jackson Lake Lodge, Wyoming, bringing together around 120 central bankers, economists, and officials from over 70 countries. Among the notable speakers was Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, who gave his first keynote address at the event on Friday, August 28, at 10 a.m. New York time. The theme of the symposium was "Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy."

The primary focus of market speculation for the week was the potential for a September rate hike from the Federal Reserve, rather than a rate cut. According to futures markets, there is a roughly one-in-three chance of a rate increase, while prediction markets indicate just over a 50% probability of a rise. Energy costs, primarily driven by the Iran conflict, were cited as the main driver behind this anticipated increase.

Inflation in the United States has remained above the Fed's 2% target for over five years, and 30-year Treasury yields have surpassed 5.3%, nearing a two-decade high. These factors, along with the unconventional stance of the new Fed Chair, Kevin Warsh, have contributed to the unpredictability surrounding the upcoming policy decision.

Warsh has convened a group of fifteen external experts to review the Fed's policy framework, with recommendations due by the end of 2026. He has also expressed reservations about the use of forward guidance as a policy tool.
