ISSUES IN THE APC CAMPAIGN COUNCIL

In Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the timelines for the 2027 political party campaign councils. These gatherings typically consist of influential party members, technocrats, and political operatives. However, in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the selection of individuals for these councils has raised concerns about propriety.

While it is common for parties to invite influential party members to boost their campaign efforts, the inclusion of heads of critical state institutions in the APC's council has crossed a boundary.

Institutions like the National Revenue Service (NRS) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) should not be involved in partisan political activities. Their role as non-partisan entities is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the state. Similarly, officials responsible for national defense and security should also remain neutral, especially during an election period.

When government financial or security managers are also tasked with serving the ruling party, the potential for conflicts of interest increases. While these individuals may not compromise their duties, the appearance of such involvement is detrimental to the credibility of the institutions they represent.

The APC may be reconstituting its campaign council based on reports that President Bola Tinubu has requested. It is essential that any new list avoids conflict of interest and maintains the separation between political parties and critical state institutions. As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general election, the campaign culture should prioritize policies and ideas over partisan bickering.

Campaigns must be informed by a fact-based understanding of national issues to help steer the country forward. All political parties must respect boundaries that protect the public interest and maintain the integrity of the democratic process.
