Initiatives like Zeekr Power can help close EV charging gap, say experts

Experts agree that initiatives like Zeekr Power's plan to establish 30 charging stations nationwide can help address Malaysia's EV infrastructure gap. Key factors in maintaining a robust charging network include location, charging speed, uptime, grid capacity, and availability during peak periods. Jason Lee, president of the Federation of Malaysia Electric Vehicle Associations, emphasized that automakers should invest more in charging infrastructure instead of relying solely on charge point operators or the government. He encouraged Zeekr to fulfill its commitment and ensure all 30 planned stations are constructed.

Wan Agyl Wan Hassan, a transport expert, proposed that automakers collaborate with existing operators, such as DC Handal, rather than developing separate networks. This approach could focus investment on strategic locations and prevent the creation of isolated charging "islands." Lee emphasized the importance of avoiding an uneven distribution of charging stations, with some automakers building their own networks and others depending on third-party operators.

As of December 2025, Malaysia had 5,624 charging stations, falling short of its 10,000-station target by the end of the year. By May 2025, this number had increased to 6,416 stations. Industry Minister Johari Ghani warned that inadequate charging facilities could reduce consumer confidence. Wan Agyl agreed, adding that the focus should be on the quality of chargers, their location, charging speed, uptime, grid capacity, and accessibility during peak periods, rather than merely the number of chargers.

He stressed that slower AC chargers are suitable for locations where vehicles will be parked for extended periods, while high-powered DC chargers are crucial along highways for quick recharging.
