Indian police clash with protestors over jobs and exam transparency

Protests erupted in Patna, Bihar, India, on Tuesday as unemployed youth and students marched towards the chief minister's residence, demanding access to government jobs and transparency in examination processes. Police deployed water cannons after a few thousand demonstrators breached security barriers.

This escalation followed a series of youth-led protests in New Delhi last month, which ultimately led to the removal of the education minister due to alleged irregularities in key competitive exams. Footage from local media showed demonstrators in Patna demanding government jobs, the cancellation of a crucial recruitment exam, and modifications to examination formats.

Local police accused some protestors of attacking security personnel, leading Patna police superintendent Kartikeya K Sharma to announce that those involved in stone pelting would be identified and held accountable.

The protests originated last week with unemployed youth seeking jobs, but later evolved into calls for education reform. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary stated that his office was actively listening to every student's voice and had launched the "Student Support Camp" to promptly address students' concerns, complaints, and suggestions. The government will enable students to register their issues online and monitor their progress, according to Choudhary's statement via social media platform X.

The highly competitive job market in India makes government positions, known for their long-term stability, highly attractive to millions. Following the New Delhi protests organized by the online Cockroach Janta Party, similar demonstrations have surfaced in other states, challenging both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition parties.

In Karnataka's southern region, a BJP-linked student body staged a protest near the state chief minister's residence on Tuesday, alleging irregularities in recruitment for government jobs.
