ICE arrests jumped to nearly 50,000 in July, the highest monthly total of Trump’s second term

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency recorded a staggering 49,571 arrests in July 2025, marking the highest monthly total during the second Trump administration, according to recent figures. This surge in immigration arrests represents a 15% increase from June's 43,021 arrests and a remarkable 70% rise from February's 29,241 arrests. These figures were obtained from government data provided by ICE to the University of California, Berkeley’s Deportation Data Project and analyzed by The Associated Press.

This sharp increase comes despite a recent shift in ICE's strategy, moving away from high-profile operations in major American cities that sparked public outrage to more discreet arrests that, while less sensational, have nonetheless caused disruptions. The dramatic rise in arrests is a direct result of the Trump administration's enforcement surge, particularly following its intensified crackdown in Minnesota.

Prior to Trump's presidency, immigration arrests averaged around 8,000, primarily involving individuals transferred from city or state facilities and deported to their home countries.

During Trump's first year in office, the numbers began to climb as the administration relaxed restrictions on where and whom ICE could arrest while simultaneously allocating billions of dollars to bolster the agency's operations. By December 2024, the arrest count had surged to over 40,177. Following a period of stagnation, starting in February after two fatal shootings in Minnesota that sparked nationwide protests and criticism from Democratic lawmakers, arrests plummeted to nearly 30,000.

However, they quickly rebounded, reaching more than 43,000 in June and then peaking at nearly 49,500 in July.
