Haze alert: Penang health exco advises face masks as API levels spike

George Town, Penang, August 25 — The health committee of Penang has advised residents to limit outdoor activities following a spike in air quality index (API) levels. Three of the state's four monitoring stations recorded unhealthy API readings, prompting youth and sports committee chairman Daniel Gooi to recommend wearing face masks when outside.

The Department of Environment's Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) logged API levels of 155 and 151 in Minden and Balik Pulau, respectively, and 146 in Seberang Perai. Only Seberang Jaya remained in the moderate range with an API of 96. Gooi urged adherence to health ministry guidelines, which include reducing prolonged outdoor exposure, wearing masks, and minimizing indoor air pollution.

The public is also advised to stay hydrated, wash hands and faces after being outdoors, and use vehicle air conditioners in internal circulation mode. Gooi noted that while there have been no reports of acute respiratory cases due to the haze, the state is prepared for potential health complications. Anyone experiencing breathing difficulties is advised to seek immediate treatment at public healthcare facilities.
