Haiti: Gang Members Kill Dozens Near Port-au-Prince

At least 40 individuals lost their lives when gang members stormed a church in Kenscoff, a town near Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, on Sunday night. The local mayor and the United Nations confirmed the grim tally, stating that searches are ongoing and some victims remain unaccounted for. Kenscoff Mayor Massillon Jean revealed that the assailants executed several people, leaving behind a trail of fatalities, dozens of wounded, and even abductions.

The United Nations echoed the serious estimate, reporting at least 47 deaths and over 22 injuries, while warning that numbers could fluctuate. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé's office condemned the "heinous attack," vowing increased security measures and deploying reinforcements. Residents have demanded the local police chief's resignation, alleging police negligence in protecting the church shelter where the incident unfolded.

Kenscoff, situated in the hills outside Port-au-Prince, has long been a hotspot for gang-related violence, with recent attacks resulting in over 260 deaths and 200 homes destroyed, displacing 3,000 people last year alone. The town's strategic position overlooking several routes into Port-au-Prince amplifies its vulnerability. Despite ongoing efforts by the international community to bolster Haiti's under-resourced police force, the grip of criminal groups remains unbroken.

Haiti, the poorest nation in the Americas, contends with political instability, corruption, natural disasters, and gang violence. The United Nations estimates that nearly 1.5 million Haitians are currently displaced, while more than five million face severe food insecurity. The situation escalated in 2024 following a wave of violence that led to the resignation of the unelected Prime Minister.

Haiti has not held elections since 2016, and its previous president, Jovenel Moise, was assassinated in 2021. The country is set to hold elections in December.
