GMAP: How UBA is Strengthening Africa’s Future Leadership Through Excellence, Enterprise and Execution

As Africa's population of young people continues to expand, the demand for skilled and adaptable leaders has become increasingly critical. In response, the United Bank for Africa (UBA) launched the Graduate Management Accelerator Programme (GMAP), a talent development initiative aimed at honing the excellence, enterprise, and execution capabilities of young African professionals. Graduates of UBA's GMAP, including Thomas from Zambia, have returned to their home countries equipped with the qualities needed to thrive in a changing business landscape. For Thomas, this means prioritizing customer satisfaction, a key aspect of UBA's approach to leadership.

The graduation ceremony, held at the Landmark Events Centre in Lagos, brought together 374 young professionals from Nigeria and seven other African countries, demonstrating UBA's commitment to fostering a pan-African talent pool. The diverse class included 223 women and 151 men, each contributing their unique perspectives to the training experience.

UBA Group Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Oliver Alawuba, addressed the graduates, emphasizing the transformative power of their journey. He encouraged them to see their new roles not as the end of their training, but as the beginning of a lifelong commitment to UBA and the broader African business community.

UBA Group Chairman, Mr. Tony Elumelu, underscored the importance of service as a differentiator in an increasingly competitive financial sector. As technology continues to reshape banking, Elumelu argued that the true competitive advantage lies in how banks deploy technology to enhance the customer experience.

The GMAP program serves a dual purpose: meeting UBA's immediate staffing needs while simultaneously addressing the broader challenge of developing skilled professionals in Africa. With over 5,000 alumni in its network, GMAP is playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of leadership across the continent.

As the graduates embark on their careers, they carry with them the lessons, connections, and confidence gained through their participation in GMAP. UBA's investment in this talent development initiative represents a commitment to building Africa's future leaders, ensuring the continent's economic growth and prosperity for years to come.
