Ghana: Ghs Outdoors 5 Documents to Coordinate Public Health
[Ghanaian Times] In a bid to strengthen the country's preparedness, coordination and response to public health emergencies, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has outdoored five strategic documents and a national roadmap.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has unveiled five strategic documents and a national roadmap aimed at enhancing coordination and response to public health emergencies. The documents, including the National Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) Strategic Plan 2026-2030 and the National PHEOC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Volume One, were launched in Accra by the GHS Director-General, Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea.
According to Akoriyea, the PHEOC will serve as a platform for coordinated public health emergency action without replacing the responsibilities of other institutions. The Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr Kwame Amponsa-Achiano, emphasized the need for multi-sectorial coordination in emergencies such as disease outbreaks, floods, and chemical incidents.
The documents are the result of a collective national effort involving the Ministry of Health, GHS, and stakeholders from both health and non-health sectors. Dr Lawrence Lartey, Head of the National PHEOC, outlined a five-year strategy focusing on governance, ICT and public health intelligence, logistics, workforce capacity, sustainability, and multi-sectoral coordination.
The estimated cost of the strategy is GH¢35.4 million. The Country Director of the US CDC in Ghana, Dr Danielle Barradas, highlighted the importance of documented and sustained systems in public health emergency management. Dr Joseph Asamoah Frimpong, a representative of the African Field Epidemiology Network, cautioned that successful implementation is crucial for the documents to achieve their intended purpose.
