Freedom 250 delivers record IndyCar TV rating on Fox

IndyCar's unique Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a street race taking place in Washington D.C., achieved record television ratings on Fox. The one-off race surpassed all other non-Indianapolis 500 events since IndyCar merged with Champ Car in 2008. Fox drew in an impressive 3.282 million viewers for Sunday's event. Race winner Kyle Kirkwood led 128 out of 147 laps, marking his second win of the season.

Viewership peaked between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m., reaching 3.482 million viewers. The race was orchestrated in just seven months following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in January. The race occurred on a seven-turn, 1.7-mile street circuit in front of the Capitol Building. Originally planned for 125 laps, two extra laps were added later in August to reach the 250-mile distance that corresponds with the race's namesake, commemorating the United States' 250th birthday.

Fox dedicated a 90-minute pre-race show before broadcasting the race starting at 1 p.m. for the 1:13 green flag. The event saw seven military flyovers and a special moment when President Trump rode a lap around the track inside The Beast, waving the green flag from his suite. Team owners, drivers, and government officials are advocating for the race to become a recurring event.

Penske Corporation President Bud Denker hinted that the decision of whether IndyCar returns to Washington D.C. will be determined by IndyCar, led by series owner Roger Penske. Following the event, Trump inquired about hosting the race for five years, aligning with his term and the subsequent administration. IndyCar has averaged 1.875 million viewers across its 15 races, representing a 32% increase from the corresponding point last season.
