France links sharp rise in drownings to heat waves

France has witnessed a 14% increase in drownings since June 19, with 301 fatalities reported, according to Sports and Youth Minister Marina Ferrari. The minister has directly linked the surge to the occurrence of prolonged heat waves this summer, a phenomenon that has also impacted neighboring countries such as Spain and Italy. Ferrari expressed concern over the tragic toll, emphasizing that many of these deaths are occurring in unauthorized or unsupervised swimming areas.

She highlighted that numerous incidents transpired in open water, including canals. The government is collaborating with regional authorities to enhance swimming facilities and overall safety measures. Ferrari pointed out that both elderly individuals and inexperienced swimmers are particularly vulnerable, as sudden immersion in cold water during hot weather can lead to shock.

In some cases, people might also push their physical limits. Last month, Ferrari had cautioned that excessive attempts to cool off in rivers and canals were contributing to the rising numbers. The extreme heat has affected various aspects of French life, from temporarily shutting down a nuclear power plant due to elevated river temperatures to prompting the Eiffel Tower to reduce operating hours in Paris.
