For this retired Jelebu couple, Merdeka begins at home

In Jelebu, nearly 30 Jalur Gemilang banners adorn the grounds of Abdul Karim Abdul Rahman and Aini Mad Zin's century-old ancestral home, marking a tradition that the retired couple have maintained for the past 25 years. For 83-year-old Abdul Karim and 75-year-old Aini, the act of decorating their home for National Day is deeply significant, connecting them to the sacrifices made by previous generations.

The couple's journey back to Negeri Sembilan after nearly three decades in Kuala Lumpur has led to a slower pace of life, with the preservation of their ancestral home's original character. The nearly 0.4-hectare compound now serves as a gathering spot for their four children and five grandchildren. As the flags take center stage during National Month, Abdul Karim finds satisfaction in the festive atmosphere and hopes the tradition will continue with their children, ensuring the next generation values their country.

Daughter Norfaizah Abdul Karim, 45, explained that moving back to the village after retirement altered the home's purpose, transforming it into a family gathering place and making the annual decoration process a meaningful activity for the family.
