Ex-India captain Pargat hails Sarjit among hockey's finest

KUALA LUMPUR: Former India hockey captain Pargat Singh has paid tribute to his late teammate Sarjit Singh, describing him as one of the greatest players he ever faced and played alongside. Sarjit, a former national player and captain, passed away at the age of 63. Pargat expressed deep regret over Sarjit's demise, recalling their long-standing friendship and the positive relationship they shared.

Sarjit was not only a dedicated player but also a cherished friend, according to Pargat. The two played together in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia, as well as in the Malaysia Hockey League in 1994 and 1995. Pargat served as captain of the Indian national team from 1989 to 1997, participating in three Olympic Games. International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Tayyab Ikram also extended his condolences, describing Sarjit as a highly talented player who represented Malaysia in the 1984 and 1992 Olympic Games, earning over 200 international caps.

He held the captaincy from 1987 to 1993 and later served twice as head coach of the Malaysian men's national team. Tayyab fondly remembered Sarjit as a passionate player, a committed coach, and a remarkable person who contributed immensely to the sport. He extended his heartfelt condolences to Sarjit's family, friends, and the broader hockey communities in Malaysia and Asia.

Former Pakistan hockey player Ahmad Butt also remembered the warmth and support he received from Sarjit during his early days playing hockey in Malaysia, expressing deep sorrow over his passing and gratitude for his kindness and respect.
