Evacuations ordered in rural Texas as wildfire mushrooms within hours

Evacuations were mandated in rural Texas on Tuesday as a wildfire rapidly expanded, incinerating ranchland and disrupting school schedules. The blaze, which ignited early Monday, has consumed over 78 square miles (200 square kilometers) in two sparsely inhabited counties in north central Texas. Amy Meyer, a spokesperson for Palo Pinto County’s emergency services district, noted the fire's explosive growth within hours, attributing it to "perfect fire conditions" and extreme dryness.

Wildfires have been increasingly common across the South and western U.S. in recent days, with a dozen new large fires reported on Sunday alone, as per the National Interagency Fire Center. Nationwide, more than 50,000 wildfires have been documented so far this year, the highest number in 10 years covering the same period, according to the center.

In Nevada, firefighters made headway in curbing a fire named the Hawk Fire, which compelled thousands to evacuate in Reno over the weekend. Flames neared densely populated areas, leading authorities to declare the fire 27% contained on Monday. The number of residents under evacuation orders and warnings in the Reno area dwindled to roughly 63,000, down from over 90,000.

The Hawk Fire, which began on Saturday near the California state line, rapidly escalated in size on Sunday. At least seven individuals were injured, including three first responders and four civilians. Fire officials believe human activity, either intentional or accidental, sparked the blaze.
