Europe's second cities are carrying the network

United Airlines announced the largest route expansion in its history on Tuesday, targeting secondary European cities to capture untapped demand. Nine of the ten newly announced cities are in Europe, with Newark serving as the launch hub for eight of them. Travel to Europe's secondary cities is booming, with Italy's tourism board reporting strong US interest in destinations like Sicily, Puglia, and Sardinia.

United's decision to offer nonstop flights to these cities removes connections, baggage drops, and lost time, making direct travel more appealing to leisure travelers. The carrier's decision comes as American outbound travel to Europe reached a record 56 million people last year, with growth concentrating away from major capitals like Rome and Venice.

United's new routes, which will be operated using the Airbus A321XLR, an aircraft that can economically serve thin, seasonal routes, have unlocked a market segment that previously couldn't be justified by larger aircraft. This strategic move takes advantage of the growing demand for direct flights to secondary European cities, ultimately expanding United's network and capitalizing on the changing travel patterns of European tourists.
