Ethiopia launches bid to host 2028 Africa Cup of Nations

Ethiopia has become the first nation to formally announce its intention to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), submitting a bid to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) presented its official Bid Handbook to CAF, with the backing of the Ethiopian government. The federation stated that the bid demonstrates Ethiopia's readiness to host Africa's premier football event.

Ethiopia has a storied history in African football, hosting the tournament in 1962 and 1976, and finishing as runners-up in the inaugural AFCON in 1957. However, the national team has only qualified for the finals twice since the turn of the century, playing in 2013 and 2021. A successful bid would mark a significant comeback for Ethiopian football, but the process comes with challenges.

CAF's assessment will consider infrastructure, transport, stadium facilities, accommodation, and security. Ethiopia must also address ongoing security concerns in certain regions. The Confederation of African Football has yet to provide details on the next steps in the bidding process, but Ethiopia's announcement marks the beginning of a competitive race to host the 2028 AFCON.
