Elon Musk’s space company to build new rocket launching site in Louisiana

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry announced on Tuesday an ambitious deal with SpaceX to construct a new spaceport in the state, valuing it at $100 billion. This significant investment aims to transform Louisiana's economy and bolster the country's space capabilities. Governor Landry likened the impact of the new launch site to the magnitude of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, describing it as a "transformational moment" for both the state and the nation.

The spaceport will be situated on 125,000 acres (50,600 hectares) of land along Louisiana's southern coast, approximately 200 miles (322 km) west of New Orleans in Vermilion Parish. This location offers several advantages, including access to abundant natural gas and the ability to launch in various trajectories. The site will serve as SpaceX's fourth and largest launch facility, playing a crucial role in the development and enhancement of its reusable Starship launch system.

SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell attended the event alongside Governor Landry, providing further details about the project and its potential benefits. The spaceport is expected to significantly increase the frequency of rocket launches, with the potential to support thousands of missions annually.

However, environmental advocates, such as Anne Rolfes from the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, expressed concerns about the rapid pace of the project and its potential impact on the state's delicate coastline. Rolfes emphasized the importance of a thoughtful approach, including public hearings and transparency in the decision-making process, to ensure the project is executed responsibly. Construction is anticipated to commence in 2027, with the first launch potentially occurring as early as 2029.
