EACC arrests two police officers over Ksh100,000 bribery allegation

NAIROBI, Kenya - The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended two police officers accused of soliciting a Sh100,000 bribe from an individual they had charged with illegally installing electricity at his residence in Bombolulu, Mombasa. The officers, who are assigned to the Kenya Power Coast Regional Office, were apprehended following their alleged acceptance of part of the money in exchange for discontinuing their investigation against the complainant.

On August 24, the officers reportedly drove the complainant to a bank on Moi Avenue to retrieve the money. EACC detectives arrested them near DTB Bank after receiving Sh50,000 from the complainant. The arrests followed a complaint to the anti-corruption agency, which initiated an investigation to determine if the officers had sought the payment to protect the complainant from potential prosecution.

The suspects were taken to the Central Police Station for booking and were subsequently released on a KSh30,000 cash bail while further investigations are ongoing. The EACC emphasized that this operation highlights their commitment to combating bribery involving public officials and ensuring their adherence to integrity and accountability.

This case comes amid ongoing EACC investigations targeting public officials suspected of soliciting or accepting bribes from members of the public.
