Democratic governors react to Supreme Court ruling on mail-in voting: 'States run elections, not Donald Trump'

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of President Donald Trump's efforts to restrict mail-in voting ahead of the November midterm elections, though it remains uncertain if his administration can implement the decision in time. The 6-3 vote along ideological lines lifted an injunction placed on an executive order Trump issued in June, leaving a second injunction in place and opening the door for further legal challenges.

Trump has frequently criticized mail-in voting, despite using it himself and despite considerable evidence supporting its security. His administration has ordered the creation of a "state citizenship list" and directed the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute election officials who issue ballots to individuals deemed ineligible for federal elections.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, writing in dissent, warned that the decision "needlessly injects chaos and uncertainty into the upcoming midterm elections." Civil rights organizations, such as the NAACP, have expressed concern that the ruling undermines democracy and the voting rights of citizens. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that the U.S.'s retaliatory response to Canada's tariffs is expected and vowed to match the American tariffs "dollar for dollar." Canada has also vowed not to accept any trade deal that would weaken French language protections.
