Cubs Defend $175 Million Alex Bregman Decision After Red Sox Move

The Chicago Cubs have defended their $175 million decision to sign veteran infielder Alex Bregman after he opted out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox. The Cubs' long-term financial risk appears to be justified after Bregman has delivered strong performances in the second half of the 2026 season. Patrick Mooney reported for The Athletic that the Cubs had significantly increased their offer to Red Sox before Bregman re-entered the free-agent market.

The five-year, $175 million deal included $70 million in deferred money. Bregman's second-half OPS of .973 helped shift the conversation around the contract, with 12 of his 19 home runs coming since the All-Star break. Bregman has also contributed strongly defensively, with a .791 OPS in 102 postseason games, including 19 home runs, 55 RBIs and a .791 OPS.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell emphasized Bregman's experience and postseason track record as key factors in the decision, stating, "Because he's a good player, mostly." Despite the long-term risk of paying a 32-year-old through his age-36 season, Chicago's roster was built to compete deep into October, making Bregman a valuable addition. Bregman’s resurgence offers the Cubs evidence to defend their significant investment.
