Commanders release former starter, among multiple roster moves

The Washington Commanders kicked off practice early on Tuesday, getting ready for a trip to Baltimore for a joint practice with the Ravens later that day. General manager Adam Peters had been busy on Monday, hosting several players for tryouts. On Tuesday, Washington signed three of those players, but the team also made some surprising moves.

They released safety Will Harris, who had been a starter in 2025 after signing a two-year deal. The Commanders signed outside linebacker Boogie Basham, safety Joshuah Bledsoe, and safety Quindell Johnson. In addition, they waived undrafted rookie Malik Spencer and placed defensive end Drake Jackson on the reserve/injured list. The team had hoped Harris would compete for a starting spot alongside new addition Nick Cross, but Harris struggled in the two preseason games while Quan Martin impressed with two interceptions.

Harris was later given the number 3 to wide receiver Stefon Diggs, a move that signaled the end of his starting role. Drake Jackson, a former 49ers' second-round pick, signed with the Commanders last season in hopes of rejuvenating his career, but Washington had rebuilt its defensive line by signing Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson, and Joshua Josephs.

Bledsoe, a 27-year-old who was waived ahead of the 2024 season, has previously played for the Patriots, Pittsburgh, and Tennessee. Johnson, 26, has had stints with the Rams, Bears, 49ers, and Steelers.
