Cincinnati Reds infielder/outfielder Michael Toglia to have season-ending right shoulder surgery

Cincinnati Reds infielder/outfielder Michael Toglia will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday after suffering an injury during a game against Arizona on Friday, according to Manager Terry Francona. The surgery, to repair a torn labrum, will be performed by the team's orthopedist, Dr. Tim Kremchek, who will conduct the procedure in San Diego so Toglia can be close to his family during his rehabilitation.

Toglia, a switch-hitting player, dislocated his shoulder in the first inning of the Reds' 9-0 loss at Chase Field while catching the ball thrown by Geraldo Perdomo. Despite initially expressing his intention to continue playing, Toglia was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday, a move retroactive to the previous day. The 28-year-old, who batted .115 with an RBI over 10 games and eight starts, was a top prospect for Colorado, selected 23rd overall in the first round of the 2019 draft from UCLA.

To compensate for his absence, the Reds called up infielder/outfielder Ivan Johnson from Triple-A Louisville.
