Cardinals place shortstop Masyn Winn on IL with broken thumb and recall Nolan Gorman

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed shortstop Masyn Winn on the 10-day injured list with a broken left thumb, as reported by the Associated Press on Tuesday. The injury occurred during a slide into second base against the Cincinnati Reds last week. Winn has been absent from the lineup for the past four games, although he participated in defense without an at-bat during a Friday loss to Philadelphia.

Winn's absence is retroactive to Saturday, and he anticipates returning to the team during the West Coast trip scheduled for the following week. In an interview, Winn expressed relief that the injury was not more severe, stating, "I'm glad it's not something worse than what it is." He added that he will miss the homestand but emphasized the importance of missing games when the team requires every win it can secure.

The Cardinals have recalled infielder Nolan Gorman from Triple-A Memphis to fill the void left by Winn's injury. Gorman began the season as the Cardinals' third baseman but was moved down in early June due to a disappointing start, hitting .194 with seven homers and 26 RBIs. Although his season began slowly, Gorman has demonstrated his power hitting recently, with seven homers in 63 at-bats this month.

At the time of the recall, Cardinal's manager Oliver Marmol commented on Gorman's positive attitude and progress, noting that he had recently expressed increased confidence in his approach at the plate. The manager indicated that the team's need to replace Winn's contributions led to Gorman's recall. Gorman was sixth in the lineup for the Cardinals during Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.
