Bucs’ Revamped Front Seven Is Showing Real Depth

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been working to enhance their defensive front this offseason, and Saturday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs provided evidence that these changes may be yielding positive results. During the 16-15 preseason win, the Buccaneers consistently generated pressure on the opposing quarterback, with multiple players contributing to the effort. Head coach Todd Bowles was particularly encouraged by the depth the revamped front seven now offers.

Anthony Nelson was the standout performer, recording 1.5 sacks, including a strip sack of Kansas City's Justin Fields that ended the Chiefs' early drive. Nelson's success was often complemented by Mohamed Kamara, who helped bring Fields down for another sack. David Walker continued his impressive preseason form by generating three pressures, including two consecutive ones that demonstrated his powerful spin move and ability to force incompletion.

Early in the game, the Buccaneers showcased the potential of their first-round pick, Rueben Bain Jr., who made an immediate impact with an inside hump move that overpowered a blocker and collapsed the pocket. Yaya Diaby contributed from the opposite edge, creating pressure alongside Bain and leaving Fields in a difficult situation. Together, these two players provided the Buccaneers with outside threats that could trouble the Kansas City offensive line.

The front seven's improvements extend to the interior as well, with more depth than seen in recent seasons. This expanded depth allows Bowles to strategically keep players fresh while consistently presenting different defensive combinations to opposing offensive lines. This adaptability is something Bowles has been seeking since the Buccaneers' 2020 Super Bowl season.
