Ban on unauthorised use of sirens still in force – Deputy Interior Minister

Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi has reiterated that a ban on unauthorized siren usage remains in effect, cautioning motorists to halt their devices immediately or face removal by police. Speaking to Adom FM, Mr Terlabi indicated that the government plans to strengthen enforcement against unlawful siren use, with the upcoming digital traffic enforcement system set to impose additional penalties on offenders.

During an interview, the Deputy Minister emphasized that any motorists currently utilizing unauthorized sirens should cease their use immediately to avoid apprehension. "If you don't have a permit to run a siren, stop it right away as it will be taken away when we catch you," he warned. He elaborated that once the digital traffic enforcement system is fully operational, cameras will be deployed to monitor traffic offenses, including unauthorized siren usage.

Depending on the offense's severity, penalties may include fines or even the suspension of driving licenses. Mr Terlabi assured that the government has been consulting stakeholders and conducting sensitization campaigns to educate motorists about the impending changes. "We're working with stakeholders and sensitizing drivers so they understand the new rules," he stated, highlighting that the police are actively engaging and educating drivers about the forthcoming measures.

The call for caution regarding siren usage comes as part of a series of operations by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) targeting the illicit use of sirens, strobe lights, beacon lights, and other unauthorized warning devices. Mr Terlabi clarified that while the use of sirens is not entirely prohibited, individuals with legitimate needs can apply for authorization, which involves a thorough assessment and adherence to specified requirements.

He urged genuine need-based applications to follow the proper channels rather than circumventing regulations.
