B.C. scraps plan for overdose prevention site in downtown Vancouver

British Columbia's newly appointed health minister, Ravi Kahlon, has directed Vancouver Coastal Health to halt plans for an overdose prevention site in downtown Vancouver. This decision, applauded by Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, comes after Sim had fought against the establishment of the site at 900 Helmcken St., near St. Paul’s Hospital.

Sim credited Kahlon's predecessor, Josie Osborne, for pausing the project last spring after community concerns were raised. The proposed site aimed to replace the closed Thomus Donaghy overdose prevention site, which had seen over 149,000 visits and responded to 480 overdoses since 2021. The location was chosen after a "lengthy search and feasibility assessment of all potential sites in the area."
