At least 12 school buses go under in Gurgaon, children stranded for hours

At least 12 school buses became submerged in knee-deep water near Subhash Chowk in Gurgaon, leaving children stranded for several hours. The downpour, which lasted from 8 am to 5 pm, caused significant traffic congestion and waterlogging throughout the city. Parents and students had to navigate through flooded areas to reach safety.

Meetu Gupta, a resident in Uniworld Gardens Society, recounted her harrowing experience as she waded through water for about 20 minutes to reach Rail Vihar, where her daughter was stranded on a school bus for nearly one and a half hours. Other schools affected included Heritage Xperiential Learning School, Suncity School, Delhi Public School Sushant Lok, Shikshantar School, and GD Goenka Public School.

Gupta and another parent managed to bring back eight students, but many others remained stranded until around 6 pm. The district administration issued a work-from-home advisory for private offices due to the heavy rain, which measured 75 mm between 8 am and 5 pm. Residents complained about the lack of police deployment despite a nearby Sadar station.

Municipal Corporation of Gurugram's Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya attributed the waterlogging to critical infrastructural bottlenecks, specifically a 300-to-400-meter cross-section drain near Medanta that had not yet been constructed. The water did eventually subside quickly, but the incident highlighted the ongoing Metro construction work as a potential safety hazard.
