Anbumani seeks additional 2 kg sugar through ration shops amid price rise

PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss called on the Tamil Nadu government to supply an extra 2 kg of sugar per family ration card for six months to protect consumers from soaring sugar prices. In his statement, he noted that sugar prices in the state had jumped by ₹20-25 per kg in recent times, now selling for ₹75-80 per kg, with traders forecasting prices could soar to ₹100 during Deepavali.

The increase, according to Dr. Anbumani, was mainly due to a decline in sugarcane cultivation and production. He pointed out that the area under sugarcane in Tamil Nadu had shrunk from approximately 1.5 million acres before 2020 to 5 lakh acres in 2025. Inadequate procurement prices and rising cultivation costs had deterred farmers from growing sugarcane.

While the Centre had set the procurement price at ₹3,383 per tonne, Anbumani demanded that it be raised to at least ₹5,000.
