AI data centre approved despite community concerns

A controversial AI data centre in Tasmania has received planning approval despite community concerns over noise, energy, and water usage. The 288MW facility, operated by Firmus Technologies, is set to be located in Bell Bay on Tasmania's north coast. This decision has been met with criticism from community groups, who have signed petitions demanding a moratorium on AI and data facilities until more oversight is implemented.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff expressed support for AI investment but cautioned against overly restrictive guardrails. Meanwhile, Australia's federal government is expected to finalize rules on the energy and water usage of AI and data centres in the near future. Firmus is also constructing two other data centres in Tasmania: a 104MW facility in Launceston and a 52MW center in Wesley Vale.

The Bell Bay data centre is projected to generate 380 jobs during construction and 115 permanent positions, while consuming only 8.7 million liters of water annually. The noise levels generated by the facility are expected to be minimal, comparable to a library environment. The council has imposed several conditions on the project, including the necessity for Firmus to conduct a noise survey within 60 days of operations.
