AAU ASUU declares indefinite strike over unpaid allowances, 2025 agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma has announced an indefinite strike due to the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria-ASUU agreement by the Edo State Government. According to a statement issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, the strike will commence today, Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

The union's decision was reached at a congress held on Monday following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum earlier given to the Edo State government and the university management to implement the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement. Despite multiple attempts, no formal response was received from either the university authorities or the Edo State Government regarding the ultimatum.

The union reported that the Agreement remains unimplemented and that there is no formal commitment from the university and state government on its implementation. The Congress, after extensive deliberations, strongly criticized the failure of the university authorities and the Edo State Government to meet the union's demands. These demands include the implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement and the payment of allowances accrued from January 2026 to the present.

The indefinite strike, effective at 12:01am, will involve the withdrawal of all statutory services by union members. This includes teaching and lecturing, invigilation of all types of examinations, meetings at various levels of the institution, supervision of students' research projects, and Industrial Training (IT)/Teaching Practice supervision.

The union has mandated its Executive Committee to engage the press and media regarding the non-implementation of the Agreement and to activate the Strike Monitoring Team, urging members to comply strictly with the resolutions.
