23 ECG engineers receive infrared thermography training to reduce power cuts in Ashanti Region

Twenty-three Ashanti Sub-Transmission Region engineers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have completed a two-day infrared thermography training course in Kumasi. The intensive program aims to enhance preventive maintenance practices and minimize power outages caused by electrical infrastructure issues. ECG has been utilizing infrared thermography technology in its operations for over a decade, employing thermal imaging cameras to detect "hotspots" on critical electrical equipment.

These heat anomalies indicate potential faults that could lead to equipment failure if left unchecked. The training, which included both classroom instruction and hands-on field exercises, covered various technical areas such as protection and control, network maintenance, substation and switchgear maintenance, and control operations.

The course was inaugurated by Ing. Christopher Anafo, the Acting General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, and facilitated by Ing. Randy Delanyo Adjorlolo from ECG headquarters. Ing. Randy Delanyo Adjorlolo emphasized that this proactive step strengthens ECG's preventive maintenance culture, enabling early detection of potential faults and reducing unexpected power interruptions.

Ing. Edem Evans Agra, Substation and Switchgear Maintenance Manager, highlighted that early hotspot identification will minimize power outages and extend the lifespan of critical assets. Collins Manu, Head of Public Relations for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, explained that the initiative complements the company's ongoing network improvement efforts, allowing for proactive fault identification and mitigation before they impact customers.

The training is part of ECG's broader strategy to improve operational efficiency and the reliability of electricity supply across the Ashanti Region.
