19-year-old Argentine starlet reflects on difficult Real Madrid spell: ‘It wasn’t easy’

When Real Madrid signed 19-year-old Argentine talent Franco Mastantuono from River Plate last summer, he was considered one of the most promising South American prospects. Despite being thrust into the first team under Xabi Alonso, Mastantuono found it difficult to adapt to life in Madrid. Consequently, he was loaned out to Fiorentina in the summer to gain regular playing time.

Mastantuono's time at Real Madrid proved to be challenging. He experienced a turbulent season, having to work under three different coaches: Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa, and briefly Jose Mourinho. In an interview with DSports, Mastantuono admitted that his year at Madrid had been tough but believed that the experience ultimately contributed to his development.

He stated, "We all had a difficult season in Madrid. It wasn't easy." Mastantuono emphasized that such difficult experiences are crucial for growth and learning. He also expressed his enthusiasm for the pressure of representing Real Madrid, saying, "I had the privilege of playing for River and Real Madrid, incredible teams." He acknowledged that pressure is an integral part of the sport and that he enjoys the challenge it presents.

Regarding his departure from Real Madrid, Mastantuono downplayed any suggestion that the move was due to a strained relationship with the club. Instead, he emphasized that the conversation was cordial and friendly. The Argentine winger expressed gratitude for the interest shown by various clubs, including Fiorentina, where he currently finds himself on loan.

While his time at Fiorentina may not have been without its challenges, Mastantuono remains optimistic about the future. He is determined to have a successful season and sees the experience he gained at Madrid as a stepping stone to a brighter future, both at Fiorentina and potentially in Madrid in the coming seasons.
