Why new Tennessee starting QB Faizon Brandon was compared to Lamar Jackson by teammate

Freshman Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon has quickly become a significant challenge for the team's defensive players. As his starting position was announced on August 24, he became the first true freshman quarterback to lead the Vols in a season opener since 2004. Edge rusher Jordan Norman likened Brandon's elusiveness to that of former Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson, stating, "I would say, honestly, it's like trying to tackle Lamar Jackson."

Brandon's ability to run, shake defenders, and extend plays has added a new dimension to Tennessee's offense. Coach Josh Heupel acknowledged that Brandon's dynamic playmaking capabilities will complement the team's offense, while also offering an additional defensive challenge as an elusive runner. Sophomore George MacIntyre, who is also capable of navigating pressure, was not selected as the starter due to a combination of factors, including Brandon's understanding of the offense, technique, decision-making, and pocket awareness.

Defensive lineman Tyree Weathersby noted that Brandon's athletic ability is his strongest suit, enabling him to avoid people in the pocket. Norman has managed to bring Brandon down a few times during preseason practice, but the freshman's elusiveness has remained a constant challenge for the defense.
