In a recent development, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has submitted executive bills to the State House of Assembly, seeking amendments to the financial autonomy laws governing the Assembly and the judiciary. This action followed the passage of the amended bills by the Yekini Idaiye-led Assembly on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The governor's decision to seek these amendments stemmed from concerns that funds intended for capital projects were not effectively reaching the people. Okpebholo emphasized that capital projects provide crucial improvements to residents' lives, making them a tangible way for the government to demonstrate its impact. However, the governor maintained that each arm of government - the executive, legislature, and judiciary - possesses distinct responsibilities that must be upheld within their constitutional mandates.

The issue surrounding the financial autonomy laws had become "like a controversial law," and Okpebholo expressed delight at the swift passage of the legislation, commending the lawmakers for their commitment to the development of Edo State. The Speaker of the House, Yekini Idaiye, clarified that the amendments did not diminish the financial autonomy of the Assembly or the judiciary.

The focus of the amendment was on the management of capital funds, with recurrent expenditures continuing to go to the Assembly and judiciary. Idaiye assured that workers' salaries would not be affected, and the unions should not be concerned about the amendment.
