Wetang’ula rebukes MPs Allegedly Selling TSC Appointment Letters for Sh400,000

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has accused certain MPs, who accompanied him to State House, of allegedly purchasing Teachers Service Commission appointment letters from President William Ruto and subsequently reselling them to job seekers for a fee of up to Sh400,000. Wetang'ula expressed his disapproval of this alleged practice, questioning how low-income workers, such as a night nurse, could afford to pay such a sum to secure a teaching job for a relative.

"If someone is struggling, you are a night nurse, as that mother said, and you ask her for Sh400,000 to give her child a teacher’s letter, where will she get that money? That is immoral and we cannot accept leadership like that," Wetang'ula stated. He did not disclose the names of the implicated MPs or details regarding the recruitment process.

On August 21, Wetang'ula had previously urged the Teachers Service Commission to prioritize rural schools in teacher deployment, pointing out that staffing shortages continued to impact rural institutions despite the recruitment of thousands of teachers in recent years. In April, Wetang'ula raised similar concerns at St Francis Kolongolo Girls Secondary School in Kwanza Constituency, Trans Nzoia County, noting that the country had recruited over 100,000 teachers since President Ruto's administration began, with an additional 20,000 expected to be hired.

However, he argued that teacher shortages persisted due to uneven deployment. The latest allegations highlight the issue of access to teaching jobs, with Wetang'ula questioning the alleged practice of using employment opportunities for financial gain from job seekers.
